The Milking Parlour - Big Green Week - Cape Farewell - The cultural response to climate change

Can we feed the planet without it costing the earth?

Earlier this Spring Cape Farewell's Rural Artist in Residence - Political Ecologist Nessie Reid - lived with two pure-bred Guernsey cows in the centre of Bristol's Anchor Square for 4 nights and 5 days for the Milking Parlour live show - a culmination of her intensive 18 month research residency exploring the UK Dairy Industry.

The show caught the attention of the general public across Bristol and nationwide - we were featured on Jeremy Vine' Radio 2 show, Radio 4's On Your Farm and live on BBC news. Following this we brought the results of the provocative show - including a specially commissioned documentary covering the show and its impacts -  plus a series of panel talks, Q + A's and a chance to read the thousands of comments from the general public who responded to the issues - to a four day show as part of Bristol's Big Green Week at 123 Space from 13th - 16th June 2016.

As industrialised agriculture is one of the largest contributors to climate change, we have to ask, and urgently: How do we feed the planet without it costing the earth? Can we still eat meat and drink dairy, and live sustainably? What are the alternatives and how do we get there? Food is complex and the choices we make on a daily basis shape our current food and ecological system.

The exhibition featured daily film screenings and panel talks, a walk through audio installation and stills and community feedback exploring the values and connections we hold towards our food and farming system - and the ways in which our current system is unsustainable and carries devastating environmental impacts.

Nessie was joined by a range of environmental scientists, agricultural experts and food producers from across the region to examine these vital questions and encouraged everyone to join in on the conversation.
