Award winning singer and multi-instrumentalist based in the highlands of Scotland

Julie Fowlis joined Cape Farewell’s first Sea Change voyage in 2011, an expedition by boat across the Scottish islands from Oban across the Western Isles of Scotland to Lewis.

A singer and multi-instrumentalist originally from North Uist, Julie Fowlis is now based in the highlands of Scotland. No stranger to national awards and distinctions in recognition of her live and recorded work, Julie was also Scotland’s first official ‘Tosgaire’ or Ambassador for Gaelic, appointed by the Scottish Government. Julie was the first Scottish Gaelic artist to be playlisted on BBC Radio 2 and she was also the first Scottish Gaelic artist to appear on the legendary show ‘Later… with Jools Holland” in 2007. She has worked with artists as diverse as James Taylor, Graham Coxon (Blur), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Bill Whelan (Riversance), Martha Wainwright, Eddi Reader, John Mc- Cusker, Rosa Cedrón, Allison Moorer and Jerry Douglas (Alison Krauss & Union Station).

Now a mother to a gorgeous girl and wife to Éamon Doorley, her long-term musical partner, she is busier than ever and still finds her inspiration and creativity from the music, history and culture of her homeland. Julie is currently also studying for a Masters degree through Scotland’s only Gaelic College ‘Sabhal Mòr Ostaig’ in ‘Material Culture and the Environment’, exploring in depth the culture and social history of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, in its European context.
