Cape Farewell, in partnership with the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester, selected Marcus Coates as the first recipient of the Lovelock Art Commission; an annual commission that invites artists to take inspiration from the lifelong work of the scientist James Lovelock. Coates created the new installation work The Sounds of Others: A Biophonic Line during the Manchester Science Festival 2014.

Marcus Coates is a contemporary artist living in London. In 2013 Coates was a shortlisted for the Fourth plinth, Trafalgar Square artwork. He is recognised for his performances and installations that employ shamanistic rituals and contrast natural and manmade processes. He is represented in the UK by Kate MacGarry and Workplace Gallery.
